The Wine Box Ceremony

I officiated for my first legal same-sex couple in North Carolina on Thanksgiving Day. What a treat that was. One of the wonderful things about what I do is that I am always learning new ceremonies and ways to exchange loving emotions.

                                                               Wine Box Ceremony

Celebrant – Angela and Tracey have chosen as a couple to share the Love Letter & Wine Box ceremony with us today.

This box contains a bottle of wine, two glasses, and love letters from each to the other. The letters describe the qualities they recognize in one another, the reasons they fell in love, and their reasons for choosing to marry before us here today. The letters are sealed and they have not seen what the other has written. They have created a “romantic” time capsule to be opened on their 5th wedding anniversary.

Keep this box in a place of honor, prominently displayed in your home as a constant reminder of your commitment to each other.

Angela and Tracey, there is only one reason this box should be opened before your anniversary. Should you ever find your marriage enduring what you believe to be insurmountable hardships, before you give up or make any irrational decisions, sit down together and open the Wine Box. Uncork the wine and unseal the envelopes. Go to separate rooms and quietly read the love letter from the other.   May reading these love letters help you reflect upon the reasons you fell in love and chose to marry each other here today.

The hope, however, is that you never have a reason to open this box before your 5th year wedding anniversary. In fact, our wish is that at the 5-year mark, you open the box, enjoy the wine and read the letters to remind you of the feelings you have for each other today. After you have shared the wine and letters and know how lucky you are to have each other, place another bottle of wine in the box and write another letter to each other sharing how wonderful it is to be married to the other. Reseal the box and enjoy the experience again on your 10th anniversary.

You may now seal the box.
